Your shampoo is probably fine. Your water might not be.
What hard water is
Water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium. Those minerals do not rinse away — they bind to the hair shaft and stay.
What it does
A film builds up. Hair feels rough straight after washing.
Shampoo stops lathering, so people use more, leaving more residue.
Colour fades faster as deposits lift the cuticle.
The scalp itches from residue trapping oil and dead cells.
Hair looks dull because a rough cuticle scatters light.
How to tell
- Shampoo barely lathers
- White scale around taps and shower heads
- Hair feels coated even when clean
- Your hair behaves completely differently when you travel
That last one is the giveaway.
What helps
Clarifying shampoo once a week, not daily. Follow with a mask the same day, since clarifying leaves hair porous.
A final rinse with filtered water makes a real difference and costs almost nothing. A shower filter is the stronger fix — replace the cartridge on schedule.
A diluted vinegar rinse, one tablespoon in a mug of water every fortnight, dissolves deposits. Rinse it out.
What will not help
A more expensive shampoo. If minerals keep landing on the hair, you have to deal with the minerals.
